It’s My Birthday, Thank God

I always loved this day as a kid. Cake, presents, attention. What’s not to love?!

As I grew up, I kinda stopped caring.

Birthdays were a nice day and all. But I didn’t care about getting anything or big parties. The only birthdays I really cared about were those of my kids.

But today, I’m realizing how FREAKING BLESSED I am to be celebrating this day.

It is a day taken away far too soon from far too many I know.

Lately, especially. Too many wonderful people, not getting another birthday.

That sucks.

So here I am, another year older, and I feel so thankful.

THANK GOD I’m another year older.

I am happier with every year that passes, and feel so fortunate to celebrate another year on this earth.

After my diagnosis, I will never complain about living to see another year. What a gift it is, really.

I’ve had a lovely day so far – really, quite perfect actually – and will spend the evening with the two people who brought me into this world 35 years ago, and the 4 people I share every day taking care of, and who take such good care of me.

We’ll come home from dinner, put on a pot of decaf, get out a pumpkin cake that my husband picked up from our favorite local bakery, blow out some candles, maybe open a couple small gifts, and just enjoy.

It will be a perfect birthday…because I’m here to have it.

We should all be so lucky.
