We Have Chairs!

The search is OVER, friends!

You might have seen this photo recently either on my Instagram or Facebook page, of our sad little chairless family room…

new family room chairs

Yes, our chevron chairs went to live with our nephews a few weeks back. I know, I know, a lot of you liked them. But we needed more function in here. Our family is growing and we hang out a LOT in this room – it was time to find some more cozy, comfier chairs to accommodate the five of us. The chevron chairs were great for occasional seating, but when you wanna read a book, or watch a movie…not so much.

And let me tell you – chairs are NOT easy to find, people. Hence the photo above.

Well, they might’ve been a little easier if I didn’t have so many factors involved. I needed some that were tall – my husband is not a fan of all the couches we have that are apparently short – me, being a small person myself, and one who loves to lay down and watch tv – it’s perfect, but for a taller guy, who wants to rest his head and watch tv sitting forward, I get what he’s saying. Fair enough. I told him the chairs we get will not only be comfy, but TALL! But not massive, because we have a small family room.

They also had to be kid friendly, because I have three kids who spend a lot of time in here and the last thing I want to do is worry about messing up the new chairs.

And of course, they couldn’t be insanely expensive.

See what I mean? Not an easy task.

So I went into EVERY STORE in the state of Maryland. Ok, slight exaggeration, but I shopped A LOT. Ask my poor mom. She was my shopping buddy through it all.

I searched online…which is scary, because you can’t test it out (I reeeeeally appreciate reviews, let me tell you!). And if you hate it, returning two large chairs isn’t exactly a piece of cake. So you really have to gamble. I kept thinking I’d found The Ones, only to look at the measurements and they were too short.

Then, lo and behold, the scary way the internet knows what you’re looking for – you know, how stuff appears on your sidebar, or in your Facebook feed? Well, that really helped a sister out – these really pretty grey chairs appeared, and looked tall…CLICK! Well played, interwebs. Well played.

I found myself on Walmart’s website, looking at RECLINERS from their Better Homes and Gardens line. Never thought I’d say that sentence, but oh em gee, these were lovely, not massive, tall, AND had really great reviews…AND since it was Walmart, I could return them!!!! And the price?! I could buy TWO for what I thought I’d be buying ONE! WHAT?!!! Sorry for all the screaming, but it’s all so crazy. And the more I thought about the recliner thing – which hadn’t even entered my mind – I was really digging it. I mean, who DOESN’T love to lean back and get crazy comfy when you’re watching TV or reading a book? Sure, I could’ve found prettier chairs that were just that – pretty. But sometimes that’s not enough and you have to do what’s best for your family at this particular time in your life. When three kids aren’t hanging around this house anymore, sure, we’ll find pretty “occasional” chairs again. The kind that are great for when company comes over and conversation. But not today. Today, we need the kind of chairs that are great for snuggles and marathon movie nights and reading books together. And these fit the bill, and were certainly pretty enough for me.

This was IT. I found The Chairs.

Later that week, they arrived and…here they are!

My husband loves them – he got the biggest smile on his face when he came home from work that day and sat down. Success! The man now has a tall, supportive piece of furniture, yessss!

Naturally, this is the whole “If you give a mouse a cookie” thing…it’s turning into alllll kinds of changes in here, so stay tuned to LOTS more fun! 😉 I mean, the gray mirror behind it needs to change because it’s just too much gray for me. And I want a reading/task floor lamp…oh, and we *might* be getting a quote for knocking the wall down into the office…I know, I know. It’s a whole thing. Nothing should surprise you at this point in our relationship though, right? Funny how just buying two chairs can spawn a big ol’ makeover, isn’t it?!

Ohhhh, and FYI, a piece of bread with Nutella on it landed FACE DOWN on one of these chairs mere hours after they arrived…yes, you read that correctly. And miraculously, it all came out – so I think we can say these are about as kid friendly as you can get;)

Am I worried that since they were such a crazy price, if they’re going to last for the long haul? Nope. You know me, I’m ready for change about every 6 months, so this actually works in my favor;) It’s not wise for someone like me to spend a fortune on something when I know I’ll probably be ready for a change before the year’s out, know what I mean?! I mean, of course these will last longer than a year, but you get what I’m saying.

So all in all, I feel really good about this decision. And I honestly have yet to sit on my couch since we got them! It’s awesome to have a new spot to relax, and let me tell you – when the day is over, the kids are in bed, and my feet plop up while I recline back…life is pretty sweet.

Long live the recliner!

I love these and will be looking at getting the same pair! We currently have a recliner in our new house. Although it is comfortable and has a durable fabric, it is a tapestry fabric which years ago went with my leather furniture but not anymore being the rest of my room has a light feel to it and I love blues! I have been wanting a pair so the hubby can enjoy the recliner action along with me after the kiddos are in the bed! So Walmart website here I come, thanks so much for sharing because like you said there are so many “pretty chairs” out there but you will find you live in your recliners! Thanks for your blog I love it!

What a beautiful choice!!! It looks just right in the space!
We have a leather recliner in our living room that is fabulous and slightly masculine. (It was not cheap and will be handed down some day I am sure.) I have been on the hunt for a more feminine parter to said masculine chair (think Up! with his and hers chairs) and seriously I think this is it!!! Our masculine leather counterpart has a high back and the same legs so it will work oh so nicely together. Now to put my plot into action and convince the sweet husband of this his and her chair need. 😉

  3. I LOVE your new chairs! I’ve never been a fan of the traditional “Archie Bunker” recliners and last year I gave in to my hubby when a friend donated their recliner but it’s just so big and bulky. When I saw your new beauties I fell in love and am going to show to hubby – question: were you able to sit in them in the store to test them out or just order on line and hope for the best? I love the fact that they don’t look like recliners and like your husband, mine wants a tall chair as well (must be a guy thing). As always, your home is lovely 🙂 Good job Liz!

    • Thanks, Lynn! I could not test them out – I had to trust all the reviews and go for it! It was a scary few days before they were delivered;) They ended up being very comfy, and thankfully I don’t have to worry about returning them!

  4. Gorgeous! Love everything about them!

  5. “‘If you give a mouse a cookie’ thing” – reminds me of the time my parents put a new floor in their kitchen. Before I could tell them what a good job they did, I blurted out, “Now you need new wallpaper!”

Love the chairs, by the way.

Thank you!!! I have been praying ,shopping, looking, etc…etc.. for a chair for my bedroom and this is perrrrrrrrrrrrrfect!

Love how it changes the look of your room.. …Nice choice!

  7. Hi there!! A few months later, how are you feeling about these chairs?! I was looking on Walmart.com bright and early this morning and stumbled upon these chairs…went and read the reviews and noticed your watermark on the photo you submitted! {That might be my new favorite way to find GOOD blogs!!!!} I’m hooked on yours now. Please tell me what you think. I saw the other post that said they are more of a reading chair vs. watching tv but would you buy them again? Thanks! Lindsay

    • Thanks, Lindsay! I think they’re great chairs for the price – every once in a while I’ll hear a little squeak, and feel a tiny wobble, so I’m not positive how they’ll fair in the long run, but so far so good! I think they’re great for watching tv – especially when your feet are propped up! Not squishy chairs, if that’s what you’re looking for, but I still think they’re pretty comfy.

  8. Omg. I love these chairs and your photos how the light is coming into the room. So pretty! I’ve been eye-Ing these chairs for a while but I needed to see some real pics! Luckily I found your review and your blog 🙂 you have a new follower! Love your style! Random question for you though. I adore your natural shades on the windows! What are they and where did you get them? I totally need some natural elements in my LR.

    • Thanks so much, Laura! They are from Lowes, but have been discontinued. Home Depot carries similar ones though! Good luck, and thanks for following! 🙂

  9. beautiful family room! love the chairs! where did you get those super cute plaid pillows from? Thanks so much! 🙂

  10. OH I love Ikea! Thanks so much!!!

  11. After about 1 year do these recliners hold up?

Are here dark gray or a lighter gray. I have a light gray couch and I don’t want to try and match. I want chairs like this but I’m not sure what color to go with.
