When Inspiration Strikes: A DIY Glass Cloche

You just never know when inspiration will strike, do you?

This morning, I had NO idea I’d have myself a fancy glass cloche sitting on my coffee table come lunchtime, but I do.

You see, I was just clearing out my messy china cabinet this morning – it was getting out of control – and came across this old glass vase that I NEVER seem to use anymore.

I also saw some random old plates.

Suddenly, wheels were spinning, I abandoned my organizing project (in my defense, I was just about done anyway;) and couldn’t start my vision fast enough.

Before I knew it, I was grabbing some jute, some spray paint and heading outside.

I laid the plate down on some newspaper, and gave it a few quick sprays of my ORB (Oil Rubbed Bronze) spray paint.

While it was drying, I headed back inside and plugged in my glue gun.

I just started working with the jute, making a makeshift knot:

I flipped the vase upside down and placed the “knot” on it.  To act as a handle, you know?

It just didn’t look right. Something was missing.

I started thinking it needed a base of sorts. Something small and round, that I could sit it on and then glue onto the vase base.

I’m a poet and didn’t even know it!

(I’m So sorry. Couldn’t help myself)

I opened one of the drawers in my kitchen island and for ONCE IN MY LIFE I found a use for those candle lids!!! You know, when you buy a candle, and remove the lid – for some reason I save them and NEVER know why I do – I’ve never EVER put them back on the candle. Not once.

But today!

Today, my friends, I found a use!

Who would have ever thunk it?

I gave that a spray of the ORB to match the plate…

Once it was dry, I glued the jute knot/handle/thingamajig onto the candle lid with my glue gun.

I cleaned out the vase with glass cleaner so it was sparkly and pretty (like I said before, it had been a while since this puppy came out of storage).

I stuck a tiny plant I had underneath it (ok – stole – from the powder room – but I’ll run to Marshalls and get a new one ASAP!) and here’s my FREE DIY Glass Cloche!

I’m SO glad I thought to use that candle lid – it was just the thing it needed. It pulls it all together, matching the base and all.

I think it turned out pretty darn cute, especially considering I didn’t even have to leave my house to make it!

  2. Brilliant! I LOVE cloches but they are always out of my price range. I do, however, have a bunch of unused vases. I can’t wait to make my own now 🙂

Hi Liz, I found your post on Hometalk and just had to comment on your glass cloche. I just love it. I also used a very similar hurricane vase to make a glass cloche a while back, but I just adore the one you made. Thanks for sharing your creativity!

  5. I want to make this as a hostess gift. How did you glue the lid to the vase??
    Thanks!!
