Over at mom and dad’s: The $5 Table Makeover

If you’ve been a reader for a while, you know my mom is the QUEEN of yard sales. That woman can out yard-sale anyone and finds the best stuff. How many times have I written in a post: “this was something my mom picked up for me at a yard sale….” She’s got a great eye, great vision – so when she spots something like this table for five dollars, so knew she had to grab it…

She has the perfect spot for this skinny table in her foyer, and wanted to paint it something, just didn’t know what. I told her to hand it over and let me at it – I had an idea! I waited for a day when it was not 10 below, so I could take it outside for some sanding. I sanded JUST the top down to its bones and used a dark walnut stain on it…

Then I used a creamy color (Valspar Hopsack – a sample for less than $3) for the rest. It’s in keeping with her color scheme. I used a flat thin brush to get the curvy edge, then just a regular brush for the rest. This table barely had any finish to it – it almost felt like unfinished wood, so I didn’t have to do any prep work other than about 30 seconds of running a piece of sandpaper over it. Probably didn’t even need to, but I did, just in case.

Since it’s such a tiny table, I just went over it with my clear protective spray paint in Satin finish. The slight sheen gives it a more finished vibe. And it’ll keep it from chipping. (Always spray paint outside – especially the clear coat – that stuff is STINKY!)

I could hardly wait to get it over to her…here it is in her foyer!

I think having the top stained makes it more interesting than just painting the whole thing…I’m a fan of the contrast. I’m happy to report Mom agreed and loves it! Whew:)

Stay tuned for another fun thing we did in this foyer…it may or may not have something to do with paint and interior doors! 😉

Can’t wait for yard sale season to kick into full gear once again…hurry up Spring! (I say this while I’m watching snow fall and my kids are home for another snow day! 22 more days…22 more days…22 more days….)

Comments

  1. LOVE the stained top- such a nice contrast to the paint. Beautiful job- can’t wait for spring and garage sale season!

  2. Love it. You always do such amazing things. Completely off topic, but do you happen to know the paint color of your mom’s entryway?
