My Summer Prayer

Dear God,

School is ending around here in just a matter of days. ‘Course, I don’t need to tell you that. Duh. With Summer fast approaching, I thought I’d take a moment and ask for your help with a few things.

Above all else, please Lord, grant me patience.

With my almost 5 year old, 6 year old, and 7 year old, I’m going to be needing this more than anything over the next 2.5 months.

‘Nuff said.

But also, help me be patient with time.

As you know, my baby starts kindergarten in the Fall. The thought of five days a week ALL TO MYSELF sounds a lil’ bit dreamy now, and I don’t want to wish this summer away.

Bless the teachers. The administration, the staff – everyone involved at school, who work so very hard. May they have as relaxing a summer as they possibly can, so they are refreshed and ready to start a new school year.

And God, please help me to be aware.

So that I know when it’s time to unplug. To not pick up my phone, or turn on the laptop. But go get ice cream instead.

To remember that there’s a good chance they might not always love spending time together the way they do now, so to say yes when they want to stay up late and have sleepovers. Even when it’s been the longest. day. EVER. and for the love of Pete, I JUST WANT THEM TO GO TO BED.

Help me be aware of the adorableness that is kids running around catching lightning bugs. Or playing in the sand. And help me to just stop and watch.

Help me realize that these are the good ol’ days.

So that on that first day in late August, when ALL THREE of my babies board that bus together for the first time, their faces kissed with summer freckles, and bookbags bigger than them, I will enter my empty house – and a new phase of life – and I can say, “What a blast that was.”

Amen.

  9. So I’ve been following your blog for a little while and love it so when I saw this I remembered that your kids(girls) love Frozen and you love DIYs. Maybe a perfect summer activity!

  10. Teared up. My youngest will start kindergarten this fall and time can’t go slow enough. I have had him home with me the whole time and though I know he is ready, I am not. I get caught up in needing a moment to myself sometimes and let the irritations take over. Thanks for this I needed to here a little encouragement for patience and for enjoying the moment so regret doesn’t fill me when the summer is over. Love your blog and all your honesty.
