Christmas Family Room 2012

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas around here! It’s been so fun decorating this year, since the kitchen, dining room, and family room have all gone through HUGE changes since last Christmas. While the kitchen and dining room are more playful (can’t wait to show you – but that’ll have to be a different post – waaay too many pictures to cram them all in this one!), I went very natural with the family room decor. Pine cones, berries, greens, cinnamon sticks. I didn’t really do this on purpose – I had no plan! But when I was taking things out of our Christmas bins and grabbing things I could use, and combining it will a few new items I had picked up, it all just sorta fell into place. I kept gravitating towards the rustic, natural stuff when I was out, and before I knew it, I had a whole new look from last year…and I’m digging how it turned out.

I tried to use a good bit of what I had. This was an old plate that I spray painted silver, stuck a few extra pieces from our train garden that my husband could part with;), and poured a little salt in there…

Now it’s a little Christmas scene!
I had this tree (which stays out year-round), but to make it festive, I hung a few mini ornaments I had from it’s little branches…

I had a bunch of pine cones, so I spray painted another one of those spare plates, took an old vase I wasn’t using, plopped it over it (upside down) so it’s sort of a makeshift dome…

Love finding new uses for stuff I have.
I also love to shop my home – this silver bowl sits on my husband’s dresser as a catch-all, but decided he could do without it for a month while it sits in the family room, filled with more pine cones and berries…

Ha! Photo-bomb by Sparkle;)
And also in this pic is one of my favorite things in the new family room – my glass lamp from Target. I just love that thing! I just stuck in one of those berry/greens picks from Michaels that they sell for a couple bucks. I think it’s the perfect filler for this time of year.

I did some swapping out in the bookcases – where there was popcorn kernels, there are now mini cinnamon sticks…

…and coffee beans and berries….

…and more salt and more berries…

Where there was my pumpkin button art, now sits this cute sign I grabbed from HomeGoods for $4.99!

Love it!
If you follow my Facebook page, you might have seen the pic of my updated Bird Cage (also from HomeGoods). It went from “give thanks” to “let it snow”…

Underneath the $3 Chevron Bench, I added a basket that was in our office – it’s filled with nothing but Christmas books – easy to pick one at bedtime:)…

Since I’m using my coffee table tray in the kitchen for my Snowmen Juice Bottles, I substituted this candleholder (that used to be in the dark dining room last year – MAN, I really do a lot of swapping, don’t I!?) in its place…

The bottom left of it’s not orange, that’s a sunbeam that was coming through the window;) I’m telling you, this room is BRIGHT now!

I bought those two red snowflake pillows last year from Target, the PEACE one I picked up this year (again, Target!), and the Christmas tree ones are from Kohls this year. The JOY one I made last year.

I went very simple on the mantel this year. I started throwing a lot of things up there, but with the busy-ness of the bookshelves, I thought it looked better with just the greens. I added some fake apples, pine cones, and white lights (which I’ve ALWAYS wanted on my mantel – not sure why it took me 4 years to do it?!

And another night shot…

The tree will go where the chair is (not sure how we’re getting that sucker down to the basement, but we’re gonna have to! We’re getting that next weekend. Can’t WAIT – there’s nothing quite like the glow of a Christmas tree, is there? Of course, I’ll post about that when it happens:)

Now, in all good conscience, I should show you what our family room really looks like. This was the scene approximately 1.2 seconds after I let the kiddies back in…

Yes, they fly too…

I think I like these even better;)
